Did You Know You Could Have Mindset Blocks Around Travel? ✈️
It’s true! In the same way, you can have “Money Blocks”(mindsets or beliefs that block your flow of abundance) you can have Travel Mindset Blocks–mindsets or beliefs that keep you stuck in the same space instead of out exploring the world!
Here are a few of the most common Travel Mindset Blocks that might be holding you back, and ways to bust right through them. Happy Travels!✈️
1. It’s Selfish

📍You wouldn’t believe how many people fall into this mindset trap around travel. That is because travel, like money or relationships, can really trigger what I call, people’s “unlived lives trauma.” It’s the Achilles heel area that people have when they really want something, but think for some reason they can’t have it. Therefore if they don’t get to have it, you shouldn’t either.
The truth is, they probably secretly want to travel too, but someone, somewhere along the way made them believe they can’t. So they lash out at you –“That’s selfish, that’s overly indulgent, that’s greedy, etc.” But the truth is, travel is just the opposite.
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” -Mark Twain
Humanity needs more expansion, more inclusion, and more evolution. So–travel! You’re actually doing the world a huge favor! Everyone in your life–and beyond–will benefit from you being the best, most expanded, and fulfilled version of yourself.
2. It’s Too Expensive

📍Perhaps this used to be true, or if you are looking to fly first class to a luxury ski resort in Switzerland or an all-inclusive safari expedition in Kenya. But if you are looking for a travel experience unique to you, chances are it’s readily affordable.
There are SO many ways to utilize credit cards and other reward points systems to score cheap or even free flights. There are entire blogs and websites dedicated to this very topic and they will take you step by step through how to do it yourself. You can literally score travel for next to nothing, sometimes even FREE. Seriously. These people have hacked the code and are happy to show you how to do it too. Check out The Points Guy and NerdWallet to get started.
You can also watch the calendar for heavily discounted flights and even get alerts sent to your phone or e-mail during discount times. Going, Secret Flying and Google Flights are all amazing resources for scoring the best flight deals. For accommodations, Hotel Tonight is a great way to get last-minute discounted hotels and AirBnb allows you to set alerts for deals and price drops on your favorite stays!

3. I Have A Family

📍Where there’s a will there’s a way! Obstacles are just that, hurdles to leap right over, a puzzle waiting to be solved. That’s all. While having a family or young kids might seem like a block to travel, it’s actually just something that requires a little additional planning to solve.
Alana Best is a working(and writing)mom of three and she and her husband took off for a year of traveling–with a newborn! And they had an amazing time. She shares her story in her captivating book Around The World in Black and White. In fact I had the pleasure of interviewing her for The Hollywood Times and she said it really wasn’t that complicated, they just did a little extra planning on the front end. Planning that included making sure they knew the closest pediatricians and hospitals, finding vaccination locations, and finding stroller and kid-approved travel groups/tours.
Similar prep could help you bring the whole family along. Tsh Oxenreider in her book At Home In The World, tells the story of how she brought her whole family including her three school-aged kids on a trip around the world. They even figured out homeschooling along the way! Plus there are a TON of kid/family-approved travel blogs and sites that can help you plan for the whole family! Including the National Geographic Bucketlist Family Travel Book, seriously you have to try at least a few of these!
3. I Have A Pet

📍I get it, our fur babies are family too. We don’t want to leave them behind, or worse take them somewhere we don’t know they will be safe. It may seem like there are no good options here, but there totally are. People fly with Fido, all the time.
Many people travel with pets, especially service animals, and there are entire blogs, sites, and forums dedicated to this very thing. Check out this Travel and Leisure article to get started, and of course, The Humane Society, and the USDA can help navigate some of the logistics and legalities. If you are thinking about living abroad, many expats also face those obstacles and have learned to navigate them with ease.
If you think it would be best to leave your babies behind, there are tons of resources for that as well. Think outside the box a little. For example, I have a former racing Rescue Greyhound and there are Facebook and Meetup Groups all over the country centered around breeds and rescues. I have counted on them many times for free or heavily discounted pet sitting.
Of course, there are traditional services like Rover as well, but there are tons of options. Pet swaps with neighbors, family, or friends. Also, college students are often an untapped market for pet and house sitting. Many are happy to escape noisy dorms or crazy roommate scenarios for the calm and serenity of an empty home or apartment.
4. I Don’t Have Anyone To Go With

📍Haven’t you heard? Solo travel is IN, baby! Now more than ever women, men, singles, college kids, everyone is setting off on their very own adventures!
Obviously Eat, Pray, Love is the holy grail for solo travel inspiration but there are a lot of books, blogs, and other resources out there. You’ve probably heard of Nomadic Matt and Adventurous Kate, but there are tons of solo travel resources that address everything from accommodations to safety, and itineraries. In fact, Conde Nast hosts a Women Who Travel podcast where every week they interview a woman who completed a solo travel adventure. To see more travel podcasts click here!
With all the tech we are now privy to, as far as online forums, blogs, guidebooks, maps, and even translation apps, solo travel is way easier than ever before. We can book a hotel or Airbnb with the click of a screen on our phone, we can bring up the best restaurants in the city, and we can plan our flight home. I look back at my solo adventure in London, back when international cell phones weren’t a thing and I had only a watch and a paper map, and cringe a little. But you know what? I was totally fine, and you will be too.
5. It’s Too Complicated

📍I know that can all sound like a lot, with visas, tickets, points rewards, etc. But everything feels overwhelming when it’s new. Just tackle it one piece at a time. Let yourself be a beginner, allow yourself to do some research, gather information, and then begin to organize it into what works for you.
Travel is a muscle, you’ll build it as you go. Start small, maybe your first foray out of the country isn’t to China, maybe it’s to something close and relatively English-speaking like Puerto Rico where you don’t even need a passport, or to Mexico where you don’t need a visa. (Mike and Laura Travel is a great destination for getting started with resources, itineraries, and step-by-step instructions. The girl has some Big Virgo Vibes for sure!)
Take it one step or obstacle at a time. Soon you will be breezing through airports, hopping flights and continents, and your passport will look more like a scrapbook than a government-issued document.
